Constants, Variables, Terms, Expressions, Equations and Integers
In this blog, I will explain Constants, Variables, Terms, Expressions, Equations, and Integers in detail.
1.Expressions and Integers : Constants
Constants are fixed numbers whose value does not change during solving of a problem. Any number like 1,2,3,4 etc. or values like pi doesn’t change while you solve any problem. Values like x, and y are not constants because if the value of x and y change. It can be any number.
Variables are numbers that changes whiles you solve the problem. Say x and y or square of x. Value of x can be 1 or 2 or 3 or anything. So the value is not fixed and keeps on changing. Meaning of vary = change.
Few examples of variables are x, y, z.
A term is a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. Say 6x where 6 is a constant/single number and x is variable so 6x is a term, 2 + 3, here 2 and 3 are single numbers. Together they form the addition of two terms.
A few Examples of terms are 5x, 7 times a number x, and a number x times one.
Expression in English consists of feelings connected with reactions. Feelings can be happy, sad, etc, in short, mixed feelings. Similarly, Expressions in math are mathematical statements that have a minimum of two terms containing numbers or variables, or both, connected by an operator in between.
A few Examples of expressions are 8 – x, and x – x.
Equations are mathematical statements containing two algebraic expressions on both sides of an ‘equal to (=)’ sign. It contains the left-hand side(L.H.S.) and Right-hand side(R.H.S.). Both together forms equations.
Few Examples of equations are 3x + 4y = 10
1.Is x a variable or a constant
Is 25 a variable or a constant
Is -25.2 a variable or a constant
Is' a' variable or a constant
Is 0 a variable or a constant
Write algebraic expression for 7 times a number x
x times one
The product of a number x and zero
3 less than a number x
x – 3
A number x minus 5
The sum of 5 and a number x
A number x increased by 10
Four times a number x decreased by 2
Six times a sum of a number x and 4
3 divided by a number x
Evaluate considering x =5 and y =7, 3x + 2y
